West Indian Soca or Jamaican Dancehall may have noticed a growing influence of Africa on their local scenes — from the celebrated arrival of artists like Timaya and Patoranking to Trinidad and Jamaica, or to the afro soca and afro house experimentations of artists like Olatunji and Konshens.
This isn’t some harkened back resurgence of political pan-Africanism, a neo-Rasta movement growing across the Caribbean through musical collaboration (we’ll leave that to Chronixx).
It is a moment in which an international people, separated by borders, but connected through shared heritage, and contemporary social reality are united in aspiration and aesthetics.
