Normani Performs ‘Motivation’ At VMAS Ceremony
Normani came to slay.
Two years after sharing the VMA stage with Fifth Harmony, the R&B songstress made her show-stopping solo debut at Monday’s MTV Video Music Awards at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Wearing a cropped purple velour jacket and shorts, Normani descended from a basketball hoop while recreating the throwback music video, which pays homage to Beyoncé, Britney Spears, and Jennifer Lopez. Surrounded by dancers in matching sweatpants, she busted out some killer moves while bringing the video to life.
“This is a moment that I’ve been waiting for for such a long time and I feel like there’s so much bottled up in me that I feel like the world has yet to experience,” she told MTV News prior to Monday’s performance. “So I’m more excited than anything, just to be like, ‘This is who I am. This is who I’ve known that I was all along.’”
It was a big night for Normani, who also picked up her first solo Moon Man for Best R&B for “Waves,” her collaboration with 6LACK.
“wow I’m screaming THANK YOU GOD !!!!!!!!! I love you @6LACK!!!!” tweeted Normani. “what a night sheeeesh I’m emotional.”
